AVIDizing Burncoat

Attention!!! As of the next school year, our own Burncoat High School, alongside other schools in the nation, will participate in an AVID piloting program. Our school will be using an AVID based curriculum. The idea had originally brought to our principal, Mr. Foley, who then consulted with other school administration and faculty like the Mr. Morse, Mr. Gibbons, Mrs. Stone, and the school’s instructional coach, Mrs. Moylan. For some of us, who might not know what AVID is, the term stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. This elective, offered in our school, is a college readiness program that teaches students key strategies like the organization of binders and the taking of Cornell notes. The pilot program is an initiative that will focus on the future incoming freshmen and sophomores. The teachers will undergo special training in the “AVID Way” to help students for every class become better equipped at learning. The pilot program is all about getting students to master and better understand their classes, and to make it easier for them to own their education through individual determination. According to Mr. Foley, all incoming freshmen and sophomores, the expectations will be rigorous as it will be mandatory for students to take notes and be organized a certain way whether or not a student is part of the AVID elective. The pilot program will be introduced to parents and students on “Know Your School Night” where further information will be explained about the AVID program through a seminar between the parents and AVID teachers.
