Who’s House? Our House!

There's one Burncoat team that is always worth watching — girls’ soccer. After making districts for the second year in a row, the dominance of the girls’ soccer team is clear. The leadership and teamwork of the ladies was a major key to their success.

Companionship in this team was what made it work so well. Captain Sam Callery explained this, saying, “The closer we have gotten as a team, the more we have been able to talk about our strengths and weaknesses and what we can do to be better — which translates into games.”

Clearly, the translation was great. With eleven wins, five ties and only two losses, the girls had an outstanding season. However, all teams have setbacks. A clear setback this year was injuries, with some girls sitting out the entire season.

Speaking of these injuries, Senior Stephanie Huynh said, “So, it’s been sort of difficult with all the injuries. Our bench is very small so everyone has to pick up the slack with all the subs. It's become difficult because players are rotated and changed to different positions to fill the holes.”

Versatility in their play was proved by the players’ willingness to take on different positions. Every player was prepared to step out of their comfort zone so they could win as a team. A certain player who exemplified this generous character was Alicia Geer. This year, she trained to switch her position to goalie. She said, “I love soccer enough that no matter what needs to be done I'll put full effort in when playing, even while injured. That's the kind of mentality it takes in a sport like this.” Proving her toughness, Ms. Geer also noted being able to play with minor injury in her ankle.

Enduring a grueling season proves that these girls are equally as tough as any men’s team — and possibly even more tough. Year after year, these ladies make Burncoat proud.
